This YouTubing doctor is searching for the most innovative medical training in the US

David Hindin thinks the process of training doctors needs an injection of creativity.

That’s why he’s setting off on a national quest for all things medical innovation as part of an upcoming YouTube series called “Why Your Doctor Should Daydream,” named after this TEDxWilmington talk he gave last December.

“The project itself is part of some dedicated research time I’ve been alotted as part of a surgical elective this winter,” said Hindin, a 33-year-old Temple University surgical resident. “I’m doing some research into what’s available in the U.S. medical system in terms of training doctors to become innovators. And since I’ll be traveling around the country to interview folks for my research, I realized what a neat opportunity it would be to create video-based content.”

Hindin is on the hunt for sponsors, as the one-man project is currently self-funded.

“Doctors must be knowledgeable about anatomy and molecular biology and signaling pathways and a million other things,” Hindin said in the trailer for the series. “But to be the kind of clinicians that are innovators and advance our field, we need doctors to be creative too.”

Part of the inspiration for the series comes from the digital magazine Hindin launched last year called Invented, which features tech and medical innovation. ROAR for Good’s Yasmine Mustafa was on the first month’s cover.

The first stop on the tour will be San Francisco’s Stanford University for an episode focused on design thinking. Look out for the first episode of the series later this month on Hindin’s YouTube channel.
