Lawyers have tons of documents: use BlueVault to manage them

Conceived of by lawyers James Maron and Wayne Marvel and run by Chris Thomas, BlueVault is an 11-year-old legal document management service making use of Delaware's big industries.

In the early 2000s, James Maron and Wayne Marvel, attorneys at Wilmington’s Maron Marvel Bradley & Anderson LLC, were looking to solve a problem in the office. The pair decided the firm needed to manage its large collection of litigation data and documents more efficiently.
Chris Thomas was hired as a consultant to work on the project, and now, 11 years later, he serves as the president of BlueVault, the Wilmington company created by Maron and Marvel.
The company provides a personalized platform of software and services which capture and store litigation documents. It’s document and data management for lawyers. Ultimately, it helps make managing cases easier and more efficient, Thomas said.

Corporations and law firms use the platform to better manage claims, satisfy regulatory reporting requirements and reduce their exposure to risk.
“For attorneys and paralegals, it keeps them up to date. It keeps things centralized, opposed to having to keep copies or send emails,” Thomas said. “There are tons of cases we’ve got in the system.”
BlueVault’s primary customers are large corporations from the energy and pharmaceutical realms, along with local and state government agencies.
The company’s data center is located in a separate facility, but is also in Wilmington.
Thomas said being headquartered in Wilmington has helped his company flourish — that’s because there’s access to hundreds of employees in banking, healthcare, science and pharmaceuticals.
“It’s a fantastic place for us to centralize our data center. Delaware, particularly Wilmington, is going to continue to grow,” Thomas said. “There are so many corporations here. It’s a perfect place for us to engage with a lot of these different clients because they have such a presence in Delaware.”
The company started with two employees. Now 15 work for the company, including Pat Noonan, a recent hire. As the company’s director of sales, Noonan is tasked with making connections both locally and nationally to push the platform. He said he’s expecting 2015 to be a good year for the organization.
“We’re vetting new clients and corporations that have case management or litigation issues,” Noonan said. “We’re in a major growth stage.”
