Pokemon GO became an obsession in 2016 thanks to Augmented reality (AR), which made cartoon critters appear in the “real world” via smartphone cameras.
The game’s hype has long since died down, but the technology — first introduced in the early ’90s and subsequently used in applications like Wikitude AR Travel Guide and Google Glass — has only become more relevant, and digital firms are taking notice.
Wayfair and IKEA started offering smartphone AR for home decorating last year, and with Amazon following suit, it’s fair to say the tech is only becoming more relevant, with applications reaching reaching beyond retail and into offices and hospitals.
