Hi! You’re receiving the Pittsburgh edition of This Week in Jobs (TWIJ), a weekly newsletter written by our team at Technical.ly in partnership with InnovatePGH and the Pittsburgh Innovation District. Each week we put together for you a slate of news and fresh job opportunities in the ‘burgh.
Thank you to all the patient, generous souls out there on the front lines of video-conference calls — muting your microphones if you’re not speaking, discussing urgent business needs with a child or animal on your lap and turning off your cameras if you’re still in pajamas. It might sound trivial, but it’s the little things that are as important as ever.
Hopefully you’re continuing to make the best of the circumstances. Part of this new world is new routines: backyard workouts, learning how to make sourdough for some reason and best of all, reading TWIJ.
Despite all the slowdowns and public health challenges, companies are still hungry for talent and we’re going to make sure you see what Pittsburgh opportunities are out there, even while you’re staying in.
The News
It’s no surprise tech-literate Pittsburghers are among the heroes stepping up during this public health crisis. Efforts from organizations like Food 412 Rescue are relying on familiar phone-based technology to maximize efficiency in getting supplies to community organizations. The local nonprofit is frequently lauded for being on the frontlines of tech innovation in the effort to solve urban food waste, and now it’s made a swift pivot to provide critical support to combat hunger during this crisis.
Breathe easy — Philips Respironics is ramping up production of much-needed respirators and other medical devices at its Murrysville plant. The Dutch electronics giant will certainly play an outsized role in equipping the world’s health systems with very in-demand equipment. Philips Respironics is in the middle of moving its regional headquarters from Monroeville to Bakery Square.
Last week we mentioned how the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Vaccine Research was part of the global effort to develop a vaccine for COVID-19. Well, a consortium including the center won a $4.9 million grant to continue that research, which aims to modify a measles vaccine for illness caused by the coronavirus. This could be the shot in the arm the development process needs (sorry), and Pittsburgh already gave the world the polio vaccine, so maybe the next Jonas Salk will help us with this new threat.
Even if you’re not getting any spontaneous concerts outside your window, Netflix and Hulu are not your only options for entertainment. The Post-Gazette put together some virtual options from local artists who are keeping live performance alive. Living room dance parties FTW!
