This Week in Jobs: Keep Calm and TWIJ On

Hi! You’re receiving the Pittsburgh edition of This Week in Jobs (TWIJ), a weekly newsletter written by our team at Technical.ly in partnership with InnovatePGH and the Pittsburgh Innovation District. Each week we put together for you a slate of news and fresh job opportunities in the ‘burgh.

It’s been a bumpy opening to the week around the world, thanks to increasing concerns about the spread of coronavirus, but let’s focus on something we can control —  like attending the 39th Annual Home and Garden Show, more than 10 acres of everything for your home (*fist pump*). If programmed light dimmers or gas-grill built-ins aren’t your thing, maybe Mandy Moore live in concert at the Benedum Center is. If none of that floats your boat, there’s always watching the Penguins slide farther down the standings in the Metropolitan Division.

Regardless of how you’re spending your time, be sure to give your favorite Asian-cuisine restaurants a look this week. Local elected officials on Friday ate together at Night Market Gourmet in Oakland to draw attention to worries of a major dip in business at local Asian restaurants. The worry is that many Pittsburghers are going on misinformation and false (racially based) assumptions that food at these restaurants could somehow have a higher likelihood of exposure to the coronavirus. That’s just not true — the biggest risk from your favorite takeout spot is being hungry again 30 minutes after finishing your noodles.

The News

Here’s what’s else has been going on around the Pittsburgh tech scene:

Local rideshare data app Gridwise announced it has closed a $3.3 million seed funding round, bringing its total funding to $5.4 million. That level of support bodes well for expansion, so be sure to keep an eye out for new openings on its careers page.

Canonsburg’s own ANSYS announced it has plans to buy photonics-based tech firm Lumerical, Inc. later this year. ANSYS, which develops simulator software for engineers and designers, believes the photonics-focused Lumerical can help deliver more products and services for internet-of-things makers and AV testers.

Jaime Carbonell, a 40-year veteran of the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University, has died at the age of 66. Carbonell was a pioneer in machine translation, and he created what is now called the Language Technologies Institute at CMU.

• About that contractor life? Advance Sourcing Concepts is looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer.
• Oxford Solutions is looking for someone with solid Java, Python and React/Redux skills along with experience in a leadership role.
• Jazz Pharmaceuticals needs a Medical Science Liaison to provide clinical and scientific information about its cancer-treating products to medical staff and health care providers.
• The immigration services law firm Fragomen is looking to hire experienced Software Engineers to join its Technology and Innovation Lab in Pittsburgh.
• Interested in an academic setting? Carnegie Mellon University needs a few more Senior Software Engineers for its National Robotics Engineering Center.
• AI translation platform Unbabel has an opening for a Senior Research Scientist.

• ChopDawg is sniffing around for an additional React Native Programmer that can help build some beautifully designed mobile + tablet applications on a part-time basis.
• Redox is searching for an experienced Senior API Engineer interested in engineering software solutions at scale to make health care data more useful and available.
• Chainbridge Technologies needs a Database Administrator to fulfill a pending government contract.
