Ugh, thank you, Lauren Hallden, because now that it’s nice out, all we wanna do is be out in nature (or the grit of Graffiti Pier).
Hallden, a designer at RJMetrics, built Philly Day Hiker, an insider’s guide to local hiking.
Use it
(You might remember Hallden from her Twitter bots: The Lonely Project, Online Dating Ipsum and Name My Bar.)
Hallden said she made the tool because hiking Philly is all about being prepared.
Some of the parks around here are kind of tricky — there’s no trial map, or it’s only posted at the park itself, or it doesn’t mention the coolest things you might see. For example, I’d been to John Heinz a dozen times before a friend mentioned there’s a Bald Eagle nest there. And the next time I went, I was prepared and I SAW A FRIGGIN’ EAGLE. You just have to know what to look for.
She built the site in a month with Webhook, Mapbox Studio and Mapbox.js, which, she wrote in an email, “has a GREAT set of data on hiking trails.”
