How is gentrification affecting Philadelphia’s elderly population?

Built as part of the Open Source Mentorship Program, urban planner Danae Mobley’s “Aging Out of Place” map looks to answer that question.

Everyone’s talking about the impact of millennials on Philadelphia, but how will their influx affect the city’s elderly population?

That was the question on Danae Mobley’s mind as she built Philly Aging Out, map that plots where Philadelphians over 65 live and what resources they have access to. Mobley, 31, built it as part of Girl Develop It and Code for Philly’s Open Source Mentorship Program. It’s still a work in progress, she told us.

Mobley was one of two open source mentees that built projects from scratch — others contributed to existing projects like CyclePhillyand SEPTA Ninja.

At the Open Source Mentorship Program closing event, Mobley, an urban planner who taught herself how to code on Code Academy, told us she worked with maps all the time but didn’t know how to make them until the mentorship program. She had her seven-month-old daughter in tow at the closing event and said she often brought her to the weekly hack nights.
Mobley is married to Coded By Kids founder Sylvester Mobley, who was also at the closing event late last month.
