Over the past four years, Chesterbrook-based software company Deacom has tripled in size — and it’s getting ready to do it again.

Despite this lofty goal, the self-described “Artisans of ERP Software” say they focus on hiring quality over quantity: The team emphasizes performance and growth opportunities, creating new roles and departments as workers develop new skills. Describing the environment as an “impact-ocracy,” employees progress in their careers and rise through the ranks by making an impact on the company or its customers, not based on their tenure.

The driving force behind this mentality is the Kaizen philosophy, a concept introduced by founder and CEO Jay Deakins that means “continuous improvement.” It encourages employees to stay nimble and push themselves to learn new skills, step back and look beyond individual situations to create scalable solutions that can have a broad impact for multiple customers and the software’s evolution in general. This has helped guide the company’s unique approach to software development by keeping everything native to the base code rather than relying on third-party software.

Teammates believe in the value of interdepartmental collaboration, fostered by an open office space and plenty of team building activities. The grassy campus helps with this, too — walks around the nearby park, company barbecues and cornhole tournaments provide necessary breaks to refresh and spark innovative thinking.
