Pittsburgh companies of all industries are accelerating to prominence on the national stage.
This year’s Inc. 5000 list ranked a dozen local companies as some of the most rapidly growing in the country, with the highest ranking coming in at #670 for eNGINE, an employment and consultant services company founded in 2017 and based in West Mifflin.
Published by Inc. magazine, the annually published list tracks the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies in the United States, based on self-reported data from the companies. To be included on the list, companies must have generated revenue as of March 31, 2017, including at least $100,000 in 2017 and at least $2 million in 2020.
Among the 12 Pittsburgh businesses named were software firms such as ThoroughCare, JazzHR and Net Health as well as other business services firms such as Govenda by BoardBookit and ProspHire.
Of five newly founded Pennsylvania companies listed by Inc., Pittsburgh had two: eNGINE and Media Creek, a service company for digital audio publishers and producers formed in 2017. Seven of the 12 companies on this year’s list were also categorized as repeat honorees, meaning they’ve appeared in previous rankings.
ThoroughCare, a tech company focused on healthcare applications, was the second-highest-ranked company from Pittsburgh, coming in at #854 with a reported growth rate increase of 572%. In an email, founder and CEO Dan Godla said the company’s software process helped it thrive in a world that’s shifted toward telehealth during the pandemic.
“Despite a global pandemic, our team has been able to continually provide innovative new solutions to help doctors engage their patients in a changing healthcare environment,” he wrote. “Our growth as a company is directly related to the over 550 clinics who utilize our software across the United States.”
The talent in Pittsburgh, he added, has been vital to fostering that growth. ThoroughCare has received “both financial support and mentorship” from Innovation Works, the Urban Redevelopment Authority and Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse.
JazzHR, a recruiting software company, saw a growth rate of 116% and ranked in the #3,191 spot. Earlier this year, the firm merged with Jobvite and NXTThing RPO.
“This unique combination of both technology and services presents an opportunity to accelerate our growth like never before,” Chief Marketing Officer Allie Kelly told Technical.ly in an email.

Since the start of the pandemic, Kelly added that JazzHR also “released new remote hiring tools, like our Zoom integration, and expanded our partner ecosystem for more streamlined recruiting processes.” With 60 employees in Pittsburgh already, the company will continue to expand in the region.
