This Week in Jobs: Acting local

Keep thinking globally, though.

Hi! You’re reading the Pittsburgh edition of This Week in Jobs (TWIJ), a weekly newsletter written by our team at Technical.ly in partnership with InnovatePGH and the Pittsburgh Innovation District. Each week we put together for you a slate of news and fresh job opportunities in the ‘burgh. Here’s the last one we published; it’s meant to live in your inbox If you’re not already subscribed, you can do so here.

There’s a theory that Pittsburghers are neighborhood-oriented because of all the steep hills, rivers and tunnels that create natural borders. Maybe that’s part of why Allegheny County residents have done exceptionally well so far at social distancing and not traveling very far, according to cell-phone location-tracking data.

So keep it up, everybody! And while you can’t enjoy the overlooks in Mount Washington for the moment,  you can now pay your respects to the Tiger King in Uptown — just stay six feet away from the other big cat fanatics.

The News

Sixty-five years after the polio vaccine was developed at Pitt, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine researchers announced a potential COVID-19 vaccine will start clinical trials in the coming months.

That’s a hard act to follow, but Carnegie Mellon University researchers are in the early stages of developing an algorithm to detect COVID-19 in patients through recordings of their voice.

North-side based Locomation is going ahead with the launch of its self-driving trucks this spring, as the COVID-19 concerns seem to be adding urgency to the development of the AV industry. Seegrid recently announced a $25 million capital infusion (and it’s hiring in Pittsburgh — see the link below in the Jobs section).

The Pittsburgh Technology Council is part of a national coalition to address how the existing rules of the recently enacted federal stimulus programs for small business loans could disqualify a lot of tech startups.

University of Pittsburgh’s Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence is offering free to the public a state-of-the-region webinar Thursday from PNC Chief Economist Gus Faucher. It will delve into how the pandemic is affecting the region’s economy.

Luckily, Technical.ly has published explainers on what tech firms need to know about the new federal stimulus — both the CARES Act generally and the Paycheck Protection Program specifically. Also, much of Technical.ly’s reporting this month will explore what local technology communities can do to ease this public health crisis.

The Jobs

Think Zoom backgrounds make everything better? These jobs are remote:

The End

That does it for this week. The jobs keep getting posted, so we’ll keep sharing them.

As always, you can check out any openings from across the mid-Atlantic on Technical.ly’s jobs board any time and we’ll see you next week.
