Hopeworks by the numbers: More than 1,500 kids trained in the last three years

A set of data visualizations from Data Imprint shows Hopeworks Camden’s impact goes beyond the City on the Rise: Some 1,549 young students from across New Jersey have received digital skills training at the Camden organization since 2016.

The nonprofit, founded in 2000, has a 6,000-square-foot hub in Camden where young people undergo training in web development and digital design with guidance from instructors.

In a bid to offer students an intro to real-life work environments, students work on actual projects from clients and get mentorship from staffers hailing from companies like EPAM Systems.

The impact of the program was put together in data viz form by Rosa and Ricardo Torres, of consulting firm Vereti Concepts, alongside Hopeworks as part of the Greater Philadelphia Arts + Business Council’s Culture:SHIFT program, which provides data competency services to local nonprofits groups.

In the data viz, you can see the maps of New Jersey and Pennsylvania spark up in bright orange to represent students hailing from all around the area who get connected with the nonprofit. Over the past three years, students hailed from 110 ZIP codes in the two states.

“All too often, when people talk about youth they say they’re not motivated,” said Executive Director Dan Rhoton. “Everyone who works with kids knows that now that’s not true. This data viz tells you: Look at all the young people who are coming here for an opportunity.”
