“Philadelphia,” as Tan Vu puts it, “is a giant educational technology lab in the making.”

Vu is the director for digital inclusion at the People’s Emergency Center, a West Philly nonprofit that serves, among others, women and children experiencing homelessness.

He’s also the co-chair of this year’s Technology Learning Collaborative (TLC) Conference, which will focus on how local organizations are training Philadelphians in technology. Spun out of the federally-backed computer lab and digital training initiative Freedom Rings Partnership, the TLC is a group of organizations working to close the digital divide.

The panel discussion features Edison Freire, whose Urban Technology Project trains high school graduates in computer support (and recently won part of a multimillion-dollar federal grant), Donna Murdoch, who founded the Philly EdTech Meetup and Renee Hobbs, director of the media education lab at the University of Rhode Island.

The free event is on Friday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Parkway Central Free Library Branch (1901 Vine St.).
