The Philadelphia Police will start video-recording interrogations in the Homicide Unit in 2014, the Daily News reported. The policy change comes as part of a package of reforms focused on how police interact with those they are questioning.
Many major U.S. cities like New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago film interrogations as a way to keep both parties honest. Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey actually implemented the practice in Washington, D.C. during his tenure as the city’s police commissioner. Philadelphia finally has the funding to implement the policy here, the Daily News reported.
Civil rights attorney David Rudovsky said last spring that there was “absolutely no reason with our technology why we we are not videotaping every confession.”
