After a decade of supporting creative entrepreneurs, coworking and creator space REC Philly will close at the end of this year.

The org’s space at 9th and Market in the Fashion District will be closing on Dec. 20 “due to unforeseen circumstances,” according to an email sent out to REC members, and there is not currently a plan to reopen.

“We know this news may come as a surprise and we do apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused.”

“The company is currently transitioning and there will be more information coming in the next few months,” cofounder Dave Silver told Technical.ly.

Members will still be able to book studios and rooms up until the closing date, when memberships will become inactive. The org’s website says it is not currently accepting new members.

“We know this news may come as a surprise and we do apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused,” read the email.

Silver and Will Toms co-founded REC Philly in 2014, first opening up a small space in North Philly. After growing to hundreds of members, the org moved to its current location in Center City in 2019.

The 10,000-square-foot space features coworking space, recording studios, conference rooms, a stage and equipment for recording and filming.

Aside from just a place for creatives to come and work, the org fostered a community. REC Philly served as a venue for local events and stayed active during the pandemic through virtual programming. REC Philly also supported local artists, entrepreneurs and youth through educational programs and grant opportunities.

In 2022, REC Philly announced plans to expand to Miami thanks to a $2 million investment from Sean “Diddy” Combs. That project faced delays and the cofounders shifted their focus back to their Philly presence and digital offerings, Silver and Toms told Technical.ly last year.
