At University of Maryland Baltimore County, 796 undergraduate students are declared computer science majors, according to a post in the Baltimore Tech Facebook group by UMBC computer science and electrical engineering professor Tim Finin.
On a national level, the number of undergraduates declaring a computer science major rose by 29.2 percent this year.
In its “Computing Degrees and Enrollment Trends” 2011-2012 report, the Computing Research Association notes improvement in several areas when it comes to undergraduate enrollment in computing majors:
- Bachelor’s degree production increased by a double-digit percentage for the third straight year by 16.6 percent among computer science departments that reported numbers in both 2011 and 2012.
- The fraction of women among bachelor’s graduates in CS increased to 12.9 percent in 2011-12, compared with 11.7 percent in 2010-11.’
- Overall Ph.D. production in computing programs reached its highest level ever, with 1,929 degrees granted. This represents an 8.2 percent increase over 2010-11.
