Encyclopedias had those transparent overlays that showed different parts of the human body, remember? Those were what Tinybop’s CEO Raul Gutierrez had in mind when he pulled his team together in Dumbo to create The Human Body. The new app is an interactive iOS toy for kids, which became available August 15th.
Buy The Human Body for the curious kid in your life, for $2.99, in the Apple App Store. It got picked as a “best iPhone app of the week” by Gizmodo.
The app goes way beyond layered images, however. It explores all different systems in the body, uses each of the sensors built into the iPad and iPhone to enrich the experience and has been built with playful learning in mind by former parents, teachers and experts in education design.
Features kids will discover as they explore the simulated human inside Tinybop’s first app (from the PDF handbook):
- A virtual mosquito that can be released to explore how skin interacts with the nervous system
- The ability to deconstruct and reconstruct the human skeleton, like a puzzle
- A heart you can pump by swiping
- Foods you can feed the virtual body to see what happens inside
- Intestines
According to the firm’s website, the team is going to continue focusing on immersive games for kids. In between apps, they will be updating Tinybop Loves, a blog about other kid oriented media recommended by the team. The site lists seven team members at the company, five collaborators that have been brought in to help with design and promotion and one intern. The team includes two former teachers.
