The speed of technological development often means that the legal community is seeking to understand and explain the implications of the advances while they are being deployed.
One example comes in the rapid pace of innovation (and media attention) around artificial intelligence and big data. On Oct. 3, a panel discussion organized by the Baltimore Legal Hackers Meetup will explore the “secret algorithms” being used in a few key areas.
“This event will be a unique opportunity in Baltimore to discuss how algorithms affect personal finance, public health and criminal justice,” Jason Tashea, a legal tech reporter at American Bar Association Journal who will moderate the panel. “Our panel of legal and technology experts will discuss both the perils of these tools and potential ways people can protect themselves against unaccountable algorithms.”
Panelists include:
- Frank Pasquale, Maryland law professor
- Sean McDonald, CEO, FrontlineSMS
- Natalie Ram, University of Baltimore law professor
The event will be held at 6 p.m. at the University of Baltimore Law Center. It’s part of the Baltimore Innovation Week 2017 calendar.
