Three high schoolers took to makerspace NextFab Studio to design awards last week for Mayor Michael Nutter and his wife Lisa Nutter, two big supporters of their school.
The students go to El Centro de Estudiantes, a Kensington project-based alternative school that helps youth work toward graduation in less than three years. El Centro students spend two days a week outside of the classroom working at internships.
The project, facilitated by Dan Schimmel‘s new STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) program called SWAGLab, taught students about design and fabrication through the act of designing awards for the Nutters, said Schimmel, former director of the University City Science Center’s arts tech organization Breadboard.
SWAGLab plans to host more programs with El Centro in 2014, as well as The Workshop School, Schimmel said.
