More than 100 technology teaching jobs at elementary schools in Baltimore County are being eliminated next fall in favor of a pilot program to put tablets and laptops in the hands of all elementary students and their teachers.
The Baltimore Sun reports:
The change means students in some schools will no longer take a once-a-week computer class, using a computer lab to learn skills and do research. Under the new technology plan, the district intends to provide pupils and their teachers in 10 elementary schools with tablets or laptops next year. Eventually, the pilot program would be expanded.
Baltimore County schools superintendent Dallas Dance made the decision, which was announced to teachers last week. Although no elementary technology teachers are being laid off, their positions are being nixed, and they must apply for new positions this spring.
