The State of Delaware announced that all residents aged 16 and over, regardless of comorbidities, will be eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine beginning April 6, nearly a month earlier than the May 1 goal set by President Joe Biden.

People without comorbidities will be able to sign up for the waiting list for vaccination events at locations such as Dover Downs Speedway and local DMVs on that date, and will be eligible to make appointments at participating pharmacies, including Walgreens, Rite Aid and selected Walmart stores. In addition, Drug Store News reports that CVS will begin offering COVID-19 vaccinations in Kent and New Castle Counties starting on March 31.

Residents with certain health conditions, regardless of age, will be required to be vaccinated by a medical provider.

“Today’s announcement means that more Delawareans who want to be vaccinated will have the chance to find a shot,” said Gov. John Carney. “All three of these vaccines are extremely safe, and extremely effective against serious illness, hospitalization, and death. I’d urge all Delawareans to take the first shot you’re offered. That’s how we’ll beat this virus, and get back to spending more time with friends and family.”

According to the State, as of Monday, March 29, Delaware providers had administered 439,391 doses of COVID-19 vaccine, with more than 30% of Delaware’s population having received at least one shot.

Delaware made residents 50+ without comorbidities and residents 16+ with comorbidities became eligible for the vaccine on March 17.

Delaware joins other states in the region, including New Jersey and New York, in opening access to the vaccine to all residents 16+ on April 6. Maryland will expand its vaccine access on April 6 to include residents 16+ with disabilities and certain medical conditions.
