New Castle County is throwing a popup art show, and anyone can participate

You don't need to be a professional artist to have your creativity featured in this exhibit — you just need to love the county.

New Castle County has hosted art contests in the past, but not like this.

On June 7, a popup art show at Glasgow Park Bank Barn will showcase an as-yet-unknown number of postcards, each of a piece of art about the county, made by a member of the community — and out-of-town New Castle lovers are allowed, too. While past art shows have focused on school kids, the popup event, called NCC HeARTed, will feature art by people of all ages.

Artwork can be of the county — a photograph or drawing of a favorite site, for example — or it can be a favorite piece of art made in an art class or camp in the county.

“We want everyone to get involved,” said Nicole Sexton, coordinator of the New Castle County Art Studio, located at 310 Kiamenski Road in Belvedere. “Basically, we want to promote what everyone loves about New Castle County. And, of course, we want to promote the arts.”

Part of the purpose of the competition is to grow awareness of the Art Studio and the programs it offers, including youth, teen and adult classes in drawing, painting, pottery and weaving; fine art camp; free Creative Art Saturdays and its annual micro-con, Anime Day.

Participants may submit in either the photography category or “Other Mediums,” where the original piece is digitally photographed and submitted. Digital submissions will be made into postcards — all of which will be displayed at the pop up.

Six winners (one child, one teen and one adult in the two categories), as chosen by local artists and NCC employees, will win gift cards and will be invited to put the original art on display.

Submissions will be accepted digitally via email through May 10 and must include a waiver (yes, the digital picture becomes property of NCC).

Details are here.
