CompassRed just got a little smarter with their latest hire. Ryan Harrington, 1313 Innovation Education Coordinator, will start his new role at CompassRed as a data scientist.
CompassRed is a data and analytics company based out of The Mill in Wilmington.
“Over the past three years, I’ve had the great fortune to be part of the team at 1313 Innovation, working to build the entrepreneurial community in Delaware,” Harrington said in an email. He’s had a big part in helping the city’s startups and thinkers, and his name is one many utter when talking about who’s who.
One of Harrington’s proudest efforts is Open Data Delaware, a volunteer organization with a focus on civic hacking and using data to have an impact here in Delaware. Harrington was the cofounder and acts as co-organizer with the group. We caught up with him about his ambitions to push that group all over the state a few weeks back.
We reached out to one of CompassRed’s cofounders, Patrick Callahan, about the hire. Harrington met Callahan a few years back to speak with him about Drexel’s syllabus on the path to becoming a data scientist (Harrington is currently getting his master’s in business analytics at Drexel). Callahan told us he knew he wanted to work with Harrington as he saw him follow through with working towards that Master’s program.
Callahan told us about CompassRed team members who grew up on sailboats, ran homeless shelters, figure skated for New Zealand and certified pilots. “You want those kinds of people who have a strong interest in data,” Callahan explained, “but you don’t just want them to, say, have grown up coding.”
“Ryan did Teach for America. He came to me and said, ‘I have this interest in data,’ and he took that and continued on. He built out Open Data Delaware. That — that’s the kind of people you want aboard.”
Harrington starts in his new role at CompassRed on March 27, 2017.
