A new study released Tuesday by global industry association CompTIA ranked the Top 20 American cities for working in tech, according to these factors: demand for tech workers, cost of living and projected job growth over the next five years.

And while North Carolina dominated the rankings (nabbing the 1st, 2nd and 15th spots), D.C. held its own, landing at No. 11 on the 2018 Tech Town Index.

In the study, the D.C. ranking also includes tech activity in Arlington and Alexandria, Va.

The index includes some data about the D.C. tech workforce, including that:

  • 170,187 tech jobs were posted in D.C. over the past 12 months
  • The median salary for IT pros in D.C. is $103,397
  • The number of IT jobs in D.C. is expected to grow 4 percent over the next five years

Earlier this year, Technical.ly DC reported on CompTIA’s annual analysis of tech job data, called Cyberstates. That list said D.C. has the fourth-highest concentration of tech workers relative to its overall employment base, with 9.7 percent of District workers in the field. D.C. also has the highest representation of women in the tech sector, with 39.5 percent.

Silicon Valley ranked 4th. Compared to East Coast peers, D.C. was tops: Baltimore ranked 16th, Boston ranked 17th and mighty Trenton, N.J., ranked 18th. You can download the entire report here.
