DC Circulator adds free WiFi on newer buses

The DC Circulator is adding free WiFi to a majority of its buses as it looks to modernize.

According to officials, the Circulator is looking implemented WiFi on the newest 58 – or 80 percent – of its 72 buses. The connection is available on all of its newer buses, encompassing all six Circulator routes. Going forward, WiFi will be a standard feature of future additions to the fleet, as well.

“Integrating free Wi-Fi into the amenity offerings on our vehicles is a crucial step forward in delivering transit services that meet riders’ expectations in a digitally connected world,” said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian in a statement. “We constantly strive to improve the customer experience, and we’re excited to offer this new service.”

Buses that have WiFi will have a symbol above the doors, and is available under the network titled “DCCirculatorPublicWiFi.” The WiFi goes along with tech upgrades that include USB ports and digital displays.

The improvements were first discussed publicly last year, when Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd proposed legislation to pilot WiFi and charging ports.

This comes the same month that the dollar-a-ride bus service introduced 14 zero-emission electric buses to the fleet.
