Heartful.ly wants you to #sharethelove this Valentine’s Day

The young company is encouraging all of us to incorporate charitable giving into our celebratory occasions.

When charitable wedding registry Heartful.ly launched in D.C. in December, founder Kate Glantz was already full of ideas for expanding the business model.

Why not establish a culture of charitable giving around birthdays, anniversaries and even funerals, she thought. But that, Glantz told Technical.ly, would come later.

Now, just about two months after launching, Heartful.ly has expanded to its first non-wedding occasion — Valentine’s Day. ?

Here’s the idea: a total of $20 billion will be spent on Valentine’s Day this year. That’s a lot of money, and a lot of money that could be redirected to things beyond flowers and chocolates and balloons.

Enter Heartful.ly’s #sharethelove campaign.

The young company has partnered with Blessings in a Backpack, a national nonprofit that provides weekend meals for elementary school kids who might otherwise go without. Heartful.ly is hoping to encourage couples, families and friends to celebrate V Day in a new way — by giving back. “Start a new tradition this Valentine’s Day,” the site urges.
