Finally: The PPA made a map of Philly’s residential permit parking zones

Our long Philadelphia nightmare is over with the launch of an official map telling us where we can and cannot park our dang cars.

Redditors and civic technologists alike have been asking for it for years, and at long last, it’s here: an official, Philadelphia Parking Authority-approved map of Philly’s residential permit parking districts.

The simple, interactive map launched on Sept. 29 and has been viewed more than 55,000 times as of Thursday afternoon.

The map was made by the Planning & Analysis Division of the PPA’s On-Street Department, agency spokesperson Martin O’Rourke told Technical.ly via email, and will be updated monthly. (Of course, as the map’s disclaimer notes, drivers should check posted parking signs to ensure they’re following current rules.)

Shocked this handy tool didn’t exist before? So was designer and former Code for Philly contributor Laura Ancona, who took matters into her own hands back in 2014 and made a Mapbox map of parking zones based on public city data. Technical.ly’s story on that homegrown map remains one of our best-read of all time.

In this new map’s six weeks of life, “we’ve seen no feedback, positive or negative,” O’Rourke said when asked about public response so far. “However, the sheer volume of views with no negative feedback is telling.”

Indeed! Here, try it yourself, or find it on the residential parking permits page of the PPA’s website.
