Mayor Michael Nutter‘s crowdfunding campaign for school supplies raised $531,000, according to a press release. The city contributed $200,000 to the campaign and plans to contribute $1 million over the next five years.
Nutter launched the campaign in early September to raise money for supplies for city schools with a goal of $500,000 by Oct. 15. Last-minute funds came through after Oct. 15, which pushed the campaign past its goal, Newsworks reported.
When the campaign launched, some criticized it, saying that “you cannot crowdsource a quality education.” Others in the tech scene, including Artisan CEO and frequent Nutter liason to local entrepreneurship Bob Moul, joined in on the fundraising.
Schools must apply to receive a portion of the money raised.
