Matt Bailey has finally hacked his way into D.C. government.
On Saturday, the Code for DC co-captain and former Consumer Financial Protection Bureau UX manager was named the District’s first Director of Technology Innovation.
Working under the Chief Technology Officer, Bailey will for all intents and purposes act as chief innovation officer, a position that Mayor Muriel Bowser promised to create during her campaign last year.
“Director Bailey will use technology to improve the way we work and serve residents,” Bowser said in a press release, which presented an access-heavy job description, focused on finding innovative job creation strategies and broadening the reach of technology.
On Monday, his first day on the job, Bailey sounded elated. “It has the makings of the dream job,” he said. The Bowser administration is aware of the vibrant “civic tech community out there,” he said. “It really wants to harness that.”
Bailey said collaboration will be a cornerstone his agenda. “This program can’t really succeed without being deeply inclusive of the public,” he said.
