D.C.-based Results for America, an organization that promotes evidence-driven policy decisions, announced a second cohort of its Local Government Fellowship last week. The yearlong fellowship is focused on using data to “improve outcomes for residents.”
In all, 15 local government employees were selected for the program — among them Philadelphia’s policy director, Baltimore’s budget director and the District’s very own chief performance officer, Jennifer Reed.

Reed originally joined the D.C. government in 2015 when she was appointed by Mayor Muriel Bowser as deputy budget director. She previously worked at the DC Fiscal Policy Institute and is acclaimed as an expert on tax policy, the D.C. budget and low-income housing.

Along with the other 14 fellows, Reed will establish and implement a two- to three-year roadmap for policy on a specific local challenge, and partner with an outside research organization to examine the success of a government-funded policy. RFA will publish a case study on the city’s progress, and Reed’s work will be included in a cumulative report to be released in 2018.
“Local governments are making important strides toward investing precious taxpayer dollars in what works,” Michele Jolin, CEO of RFA, said in a statement. “Through this Fellowship, Results for America seeks to accelerate this work for 15 local governments by focusing on policy wins and evaluation partnerships that will improve outcomes for residents by making data and evidence primary factors in policy decisions.”
D.C. was not a part of the first edition of this fellowship, but you can read a report on the work that cohort did here.
