Get ready to ride the H Street streetcar

Really. The grand opening is on Feb. 27 — Mayor Bowser has made an official announcement.

Here’s a piece of news from probably the most joked-about piece of transportation technology in D.C.: The H Street streetcar is finally going to start carrying passengers!

Given Mayor Muriel Bowser’s announcement about the grand opening on Twitter — the party starts Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. — local media is pretty sure this isn’t a joke. However, given that this $200 million project has been in development for more than 10 years and has had its fair share of false starts, many are swallowing the announcement with, as the Washingtonian writes, “a dash of disbelief.”

Apparently the streetcar will run six days a week, every 15 minutes, from Union Station to Oklahoma Avenue. For the first few months it’ll be free, too.
Want to join in the opening day festivities? The kickoff will be held at the stop at 13th and H. A group from Greater Greater Washington will be there and they’re inviting all to join — don’t forget to tweet us your experience.
So … guess now’s a good time to “learn how to ride” via this bizarre DDOT video?
