Delaware’s drone task force is moving forward with these initiatives

The folks behind the DelDOT task force have been a busy bunch.

The Delaware UAS/UAV Task Force has been diligently convening since its creation in December, and now we’re starting to see some tangible outcomes.
On Thursday, the group be talking about finalizing a Delaware Drone Guide, which is a compilation of federal and state rules, guidelines and best practices for drone use.
The group has released a drone safety information card for public sharing (pictured above). There’s also a draft resolution to the state legislature and the governor about supporting the development of drones in Delaware as they relate to technologies, services and education.
Also in the works are short videos about drone use that target millennials. One would be about drones and economic development while the other would focus on drone safety. The task force is currently looking for funding partners and sponsorship opportunities with the video production.
The task force, headed by Josh Thomas, the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) aeronautics coordinator, was created in partnership with DelDOT and the Delaware River and Bay Authority with the three-fold purpose of:

  • Encouraging the UAS/UAV (unmanned aerial systems and vehicles) industry to come to Delaware, and considering drone-use applications for things like agricultural spray application, law enforcement, infrastructure inspection, real estate marketing and cinematic uses.
  • Creating an outreach program to educate the public on safety.
  • Advocating for the state’s colleges and universities to develop operator training programs, which could include training mechanics to repair drones.

The task force’s next meeting is Thursday from 2-4 p.m. at Delaware State University.
