Earlier this summer, AT&T said it invested $450 million in network upgrades throughout the state of Maryland over three years from 2016 to 2018.

This week, the company provided specific numbers for Baltimore, saying that $250 million was invested in the metro area.

“Greater Baltimore is home to world-class colleges and universities, extraordinary hospitals, companies of all sizes, and entrepreneurs and innovators who work every day to keep our region strong,” said Donald C. Fry, president and CEO of the Greater Baltimore Committee, in a statement. “AT&T’s investment in the Baltimore region creates jobs, boosts the economy and ensures that employers have access to cutting-edge telecommunications and Internet technology.

“The region is very fortunate to have a leading company so committed to investing in new technologies, which is a key to a strong, viable and competitive economy,” he said.

The upgrades were made to both wireless and wired networks. In 2018, the company said it added new cell sites — or towers — and making upgrades to existing infrastructure. The company is also behind the rollout the FirstNet system, which is designed to improve communications for first responders. Both types of improvements were on view in Baltimore County earlier this year.
