Brooklyn socialists met up Monday night in Bushwick to employ a staple of the startup world: a hack night.
Members of the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America gathered at the radical community center Mayday Space for a day of coworking, pitching ideas and working on projects for the media arm of the socialist organization.
“We’re the media working group, which is like an auxiliary service hub within the organization doing video work, websites and literature design,” explained one of the organizers, Andrea Guinn, in a phone call. “We wanted something with a community vibe that would be easier for people to attend, so it was all day. New members were encouraged to come and we were working on the video, web and print campaigns together.”
Guinn said one of the group’s projects is the protest around B&H Photo Video. The company, which has 330 warehouse employees in Bushwick and the Brooklyn Navy Yard, announced a plan to move to New Jersey during contract negotiations with its workers’ union. The union protested and picketed the company on May Day.
The NYC DSA said on Facebook it will look to make the coworking event bi-weekly, and open to all who want to participate.-30-
