How much does a school cost?
The New York University Polytechnic School of Engineering is now called the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, after a $100 million donation to the school from Chandrika and Ranjan Tandon.
According to the school’s announcement, the money will go primarily to hiring more faculty and bulking up academic programming.
Chandrika Tandon is a trustee of the university. She’s a former partner at the consulting firm McKinsey & Company, and is the founder of Tandon Capital, a financial advisory firm. She also has received a Grammy nomination for best contemporary world music in 2011 for her album, “Soul Call.”
She is the sister of PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi.
Her husband, Ranjan Tandon, ran a very successful hedge fund from 1990 to 2012 called Libra Advisors. In 2012 Ranjan returned outside investments and converted the fund to a family fund, which he still manages.
“The Tandons’ donation is believed to be the largest philanthropic gift by a member of the Indian-American community,” NYU officials said in their statement.
The school is not new to name changes. It had been the Polytechnic Institute of NYU and before that, Polytechnic University.
