The Maryland Tech Council brought the Bio+Tech Conference to Baltimore on Thursday. For the first time, the event closed out with a pitch competition featuring startups from around the state.

Remedy Plan Therapeutics was named the winner, as founder Greg Crimmins took home the big check for $5,000.

The startup, which has a location in Rockville, is developing drugs that target cancer stem cells to stop tumors from growing and spreading. The company says the new form of treatment would be less toxic than chemotherapy and radiation-based treatments. Previously, the company raised $100,000 in a crowdfunding campaign.

“The judges were very impressed with the quality of all five companies who pitched and were excited to see the potential these companies bring to Maryland,” Anthony Millin, a judge of the contest who chairs  startups and venture capital for Shulman Rogers. “We were specifically impressed with Remedy Plan Therapeutics and the team’s innovative approach to cancer research.”

Along with Remedy Plan, startups who pitched included:

  • Sonavex, the Baltimore-based startup developing imaging technology that uses ultrasound to provide clinicians with visual data.

  • VakSea, a startup working at Baltimore-based IMET developing products to provide immune protection for shrimp.
  • JuneBrain, a medical device startup creating home monitoring disease activity for multiple sclerosis patients.
  • AlgometRx, a startup developing a platform to measure pain.
