Bloomberg Philanthropies is expanding support for arts organizations in Baltimore with a new round of grant funding.
This week, media mogul and former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg‘s city-focused charitable arm announced that 14 Baltimore arts and culture nonprofits received funding.

The Arts Innovation and Management grants seek to strengthen capacity at small and midsize organizations. As part of the program the University of Maryland’s DeVos Institute of Arts Management will conduct seminars for all funded organizations. Organizations will also “engage in activities that strengthen their long-term health and goals, and will receive one-on-one consultations and implementation support for organization leaders and their boards,” according to Bloomberg.
The amount of the individual grants were not disclosed, but Bloomberg said they are for about 10 percent of an organization’s operational budget. Bloomberg committed $43 million for the multi-year initiative, which now spans seven cities.
“We’re thrilled that Bloomberg Philanthropies has selected Baltimore for this significant funding that will serve to equip a new generation of artistic leaders with the support and professional training in the essential areas that constitute thriving arts organizations,” Mayor Catherine Pugh said in a statement.
The grants build on the Bloomberg Arts Internship, which debuted in Baltimore in 2017 and continued with 35 students in 2018.
Among the recipients of the Arts Innovation and Management grant is Young Audiences, the Remington-based nonprofit providing arts education in Maryland schools. The nonprofit was among those asked to apply as part of Bloomberg’s invite-only program.
“This crucial funding will support all of our programs, from year-round arts integrated classroom residencies to teacher and artist professional development, by providing flexibility to push more projects forward, try new things, and continue reaching as many students as possible with arts infused learning experiences,” said Lisa Fritsch, Young Audiences Communications Manager.
