Cutting-edge science is happening all over Baltimore, and it’s not limited to labs. Baltimore Innovation Week’s Sciences Track presents a chance to go inside these spaces, and hear from the people who are engaging in cutting-edge research, and bringing the benefits to the whole city.
Here’s a look at five events that stood out:

Healthier Communities Through Technology

• On Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at New Beginnings Barber Shop and Vanity the Salon in West Baltimore, explore how Kaiser Permanente and gymGO are partnering to employ two way video streaming, wearable data and gamification to address health. It’s part of KP’s Total Health efforts throughout Baltimore, with a special focus on zip code 21223.

Smart Cities Summit

• This daylong Oct. 2 event from Innovation Village focuses on the technology that is transforming cities, and how it can reach everyone. Speakers include Google’s former SRE Director, the mayor of Seat Pleasant, Md., and a fintech founder focusing on underbanked communities. The day closes with a look at the new Conscious Venture Lab space at Baltimore City Community College.

Cutting Edge Research on Solar Energy and Nanoparticle Application

• Tiny particles can have a big impact. Go inside the research at Coppin State University’s Center for Nanotechnology. Projects include dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) research, terahertz radiation and analysis of gold particles. The event is Oct. 3 at 10 a.m.

Sciences Conference

• On Oct. 4, Baltimore’s health and sciences innovation community gathers at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy for demos, discussions and of course a happy hour to close out the day.

Meet Baltimore’s Community Biotechnology Lab

In Highlandtown, the Baltimore Under Ground Science Space (BUGSS) is looking to bring the wonders of science to the city. On Oct. 7, stop by to tour the space do some hands-on science work and meet the Baltimore BioCrew.
