Philadelphia cultural organizations, take note: Opera Philadelphia’s innovation game is strong. We love watching their experiments with technology to bring in new audiences.
They encouraged bloggers to tweet during the opera.
They hired Drexel’s Youngmoo Kim as their resident technologist.
Now they’re working with Penn and Drexel to develop an online course for their upcoming production, Cold Mountain, which is based on the Charles Frazier Civil War epic of the same name.

“Debuting a new work is an incredible opportunity to engage and broaden audiences for opera, particularly when coupled with emerging interactive channels — like an online course,” Kim said in a statement. “This course gives a much deeper explanation of the work, staging and performance, which can’t be gleaned from skimming the playbill before curtain.”
Kim worked with Penn grad student Lily Kass to create the course, as well as Drexel’s Michael Scheuermann and Michael Shelmet, who work in Drexel’s instructional technology department.
