DC ranked as most negative city, based on Twitter emoji data

According to a new tool that tracks positivity expressed using emojis on Twitter in major cities, D.C. ranks as the world’s most negative city. According to the data, only 69.8 percent of tweets coming from the District were positive, as of November. It’s important to note that only English-speaking tweets were included in the data.

The Emoji Cities tool was created by Smart Destinations, a company that packages admission to a number of attractions in major cities that can be purchased online. Smart Destinations used its tool to rank data from 69 cities using the official Twitter API. The tool reveals the most popular emojis, tweets, hashtags and mentions in some of the world’s biggest cities. Along with D.C., cities like Boston, Philadelphia, Brussels and Johannesburg were included on the list.

Emoji Cities also includes expert commentary from authorities and academic leaders around the world, providing insight into emerging trends and patterns, cultural and international differences.

D.C. wasn’t the only U.S. city to make the top 10 most negative cities. Only one city on the list was outside of the U.S., and no U.S. cities are represented in the top 10 most positive.

 

Here are some other insights from the data collected:

• The most used emoji is the laughing face with the tears of joy.
• The least used emoji is the thinking face.
• Eastern Asia and South America are two of the most positive regions.
• President Donald Trump is the top trending tweeter in every city.

Emoji Cities will be updated to include the most common trending hashtags and the five most commonly tagged accounts. Using the interactive map linked above, you can click on each city to find specific insights.
