Sometimes, public transportation is not just about public transportation.
This certainly seemed the case with the DC Streetcar during its long months of testing, delay and, finally, opening. Though derided for being over-budget, slow and perhaps even not particularly necessary, streetcar enthusiasts have always cited economic development potential as one of the streetcar’s primary boons.
Much in line with that promise, the streetcar website published a guide to “The best of H Street and Benning Road” last week. The guide highlights H Street’s restaurants, bars, entertainment options and more at each of the streetcar’s stops.

“This resource reflects DDOT’s investment in the business community and the positive impact of the streetcar,”Anwar Saleem, executive director of H Street Main Street, said in a statement. “H/Benning is a thriving D.C. neighborhood and I look forward to more people having the opportunity to experience it using the DC Streetcar business page as a guide.”
Will the guide help bring more visitors and, crucially, their money to H Street?
The guide is certainly well-designed with an attractive user interface, but the proof will be in the numbers.
Thinking about a visit? Hey, the streetcar’s still free.
