Delaware College Scholars’ Dr. Tony Alleyne honored by Teach for America

Tony Alleyne Ed.D, the executive director for Delaware College Scholars (DCS), has been awarded the Teach for America-Delaware Markell Leadership Award.

Dr. Alleyne helped set the foundation for the DCS program as a member of Teach for America, an education equity program that puts leaders to work in under-resourced schools. The DCS program is designed for first-generation college-bound high school students and those traditionally marginalized by the higher education system. Students spend three summers, starting from the summer after ninth grade, in a three-week residential program at St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, where they participate in academically rigorous college-style curriculum, as well as receive year-round ongoing support.

This year, the program graduated 36 college-bound students.

“Dr. Alleyne’s leadership, both as an alum of Teach For America and the Executive Director of Delaware College Scholars, has positively impacted the lives of countless students across the state,” said Teach for America-Delaware’s executive director, Tamara Smith, in a press statement. “We are incredibly proud of his work with some of Delaware’s highest achieving students and supporting their path to college and beyond.”

Dr. Alleyne worked with Teach for America as a teacher, coach and corp member advisor.

“The skills I learned in Teach for America helped me understand and appreciate how we as educators have a real opportunity to provide students from underserved communities with the information they need to break down barriers and succeed in high school and college,” he said. “It’s an honor to be recognized by such a well-respected organization boasting a network of some of the best educational leaders in the nation.”
