Hans Medlarz is Sussex County’s new head engineer

Sussex County has a new chief engineer in Hans Medlarz, according to the Cape Gazette.
The position has been vacant since September when longtime county engineer Mike Izzo retired.
What’s a county engineer do, exactly? Medlarz will oversee a staff of about 150, across nine divisions, who design, build and maintain county projects. That staff includes engineers, project managers, draftsmen, construction technicians, wastewater operators, electricians and maintenance crews.
“Hans brings the right mix of technical knowledge, management skills and professional experience that Sussex County needs in the county engineer position,” County Administrator Todd Lawson told the Cape Gazette.

Originally from Germany, Medlarz, 60, lives in Milford. He earned his master’s degree in engineering from Georgia Tech. Medlarz has worked for engineering consulting firms and was previously Kent County’s chief engineer.
