Maven Security Consulting founder David Rhoades is continuing his “all hands on deck” crusade to raise awareness about cybersecurity issues.
Rhoades, who leads the now-resurrected Delaware chapter of OWASP (Online Web Application Security Project), has been determined to educate Delawareans about cybersecurity issues by hosting educational and inclusive events in and around Wilmington — mostly through OWASP.
The next OWASP meetup (open to all) will be at 1313 Innovation on Sept. 1. Rhoades said attendees will be participating in some “hands-on hacking” as they fight their way through a capture the flag (CTF) exercise.
Never played capture the flag? You can read about a full version of the exercise here, but here’s how it’ll work at OWASP’s meetup:
- Attendees will be provided targets in the form of fake, locally hosted, “intentionally vulnerable” web applications.
- Attendees will group into teams or go solo, then begin hacking away.
- After a given amount of time, attendees will regroup to collectively analyze what flaws were found in the targets — how security was breached and how targets can prevent that from happening.
Rhoades said the Delaware OWASP chapter plans to hold CTFs on a regular basis.
