It’s a good time to be a food startup. Coming off the announcement last week of FoodWorks, the AWS for food startups, with a big gleaming communal kitchen in Bed-Stuy, comes the spring Make It In BK pitch competition, geared at — you guessed it — food startups.

For the uninitiated, business booster organization Downtown Brooklyn Partnership has an initiative called Make It In BK, which hosts a pitch competition every three months. They get very good judges, including venture capitalists, successful founders and government representatives. Former winners have found success in the Brooklyn tech world, and include Propel and Humblee.

This season’s focus is food startups.

“You should especially apply if your food innovation startup addresses issues like sustainability, agriculture, technology, food trends, or new tastes,” according to Make It In BK. It won’t be the first time the competition has highlighted the borough’s culinary innovators: Indian condiment maker Brooklyn Delhi won last September’s contest.

Winner gets $5,000 and mentoring from some of Brooklyn’s heavy hitters. Applications are open until March 3.
