DC startups have long leaned into reliable industries like government IT, but the region’s industry strengths are expanding to meet new tech needs.

That trend is apparent in this year’s edition of RealLIST Startups, our annual collection of the region’s most promising young companies, those that show real traction and potential. Since we launched the feature here nine years ago, we’ve spotlighted nearly 170 DMV companies as list members.

Since we launched RealLIST Startups in DC nine years ago, we’ve spotlighted nearly 170 companies as honorees.

In 2026, health and biotech still dominate the list, with companies building both hardware and software. And defense and national security-focused tech continues to boom. But other sectors are emerging, like innovations around data center energy use, especially relevant because of the hyperscale clusters in Northern Virginia. Local founders are also flexing their government proximity to build software for civic engagement and ballot processes.

To build this list each year, we put out a call for nominations, review our past coverage and do a lot of internet sleuthing. Eligible startups must be founded no earlier than 2023, have shown market traction, and be headquartered (or have a founder stationed) in the DMV.

Know a company that should be on this roster next year? Our nominations form stays open year-round, and you can also suggest someone to be featured in RealLIST Connectors (coming this spring) or RealLIST Innovators (this summer).
