So here’s a fun fact: Nintendo turns 136 years old today, Sept. 23.
In 1889, there were no video games, let alone Mario, Link or Tetris. But that was the year that Fusajiro Yamauchi founded Nintendo Koppai, a shop that hand-crafted “hanafuda” playing cards in Kyoto, Japan.
These “flower cards,” used to play a matching and memory game, were decorated with seasonal images like cherry blossoms, maple leaves, and cranes. With gambling tightly regulated in 19th-century Japan, hanafuda offered a legal form of gaming, making Nintendo a household name long before video games existed.
Over time, Nintendo transformed itself again and again — from cards to toys, from arcade games to home consoles, from handhelds to Switch. That adaptability turned a small family business into one of the most influential entertainment companies in the world.
In today’s job market, the same lesson applies: Whether you’re pivoting industries or leveling up in your current role, staying open to change will keep your career game strong.
