Did you know that Metro’s website (wmata.com) is one of the largest transit websites in the U.S.? This according to Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority itself, which claims that the 1,000-page site sees “nearly 22 million pageviews each month from more than 1.6 million users.”
But WMATA, perhaps unsurprisingly to Metro pessimists, hasn’t been putting its best foot forward.
The old wmata.com site is busy, complex and struggles on mobile. So WMATA decided to completely revamp its online presence, and released a beta version of its new website on Wednesday.
According to a press release, this is the first time that the Metro website has been updated in eight years, and boy is it an improvement. The new site features responsive design, a streamlined trip planner and geolocation technology, among other things.
“The new site gives riders the tools they use the most, front and center, in a much more mobile friendly, easy-to-use format,” Metro general manager and CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld said in a statement.
Even so, we’re sure some aspects of the new site could be better, and Metro is too. That’s why WMATA is currently accepting public feedback on the beta site. “We look forward to incorporating additional customer feedback as this final testing phase gets underway,” Wiedefeld said. The agency plans to formally launch the new site later this summer.
