Philly’s new CIO is a software development expert

After a 9-month search to replace longtime CIO Mark Wheeler, Melissa Scott is set to take over as Philadelphia’s top tech staffer. The software dev expert and department vet will assume leadership of the Office of Innovation and Technology from interim CIO Sandra Carter.

The NET/WORK job fair returns during PTW 2024

Dozens of hiring companies and hundreds of tech professionals will gather at Launchpad in Center City on May 7 for NET/WORK tech job fair during Philly Tech Week 2024.

Tickets are just $10, and include opportunities to mingle with employers and job seekers, attend professional development workshops, and score a free professional headshot. The event concludes with a networking happy hour.

News Incubator: What else to know today

• Four organizations a set to receive a total of $1.15 million from the city’s Workforce Solutions Grant program run by the Commerce Department. They are Propel America, OIC Philadelphia, Congreso and a joint bootcamp from Hopeworks and Rodriguez. [City of Philadelphia]

• Biotech company Carisma Therapeutics plans to lay off about 40 workers this quarter. The company started 2024 with 107 employees, so that’s around a 37% reduction in workforce. [Philly Biz Journal/Technical.ly]

•  The Philly-headquartered national Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics awarded its Jon van Neumann prize to Jorge Nocedal for his work in nonlinear optimization. [SIAM]
