Delaware Power Movies: A DSU alum returns to lead his old aviation program

The education sector has seen some big leadership changes, including an interim dean at a University of Delaware (UD) college and a new program director at Delaware State University (DSU). Other people making professional moves include an up-and-coming UD student, a medical specialist and two members of the Delaware Housing Authority.

DSU alum returns to head its aviation program

Delaware State University named CJ Charlton, a United Airlines captain and chair of the school’s Aviation Advisory Council, as its aviation program director. Charlton graduated from this program in 1995 and is the founder and executive director of the Black Aviation Endowment Fund.

”CJ is coming home. After Colonel [Michael] Hales’ stellar run, I cannot think of anyone more passionate, qualified and committed than Captain Charlton to take over the program,” DSU president Tony Allen said in an announcement. “He will lead a talented team of his colleagues and an ever-growing cadre of exceptional students to take us to the next level.”

Memory care doctor to lead new center with $2.5 million grant

Steven Huege has been named The Swank Foundation Endowed Chair in Memory Care and Geriatrics at ChristianaCare.

“Dr. Huege is a leader in geriatric psychiatry who has committed his career to expert, compassionate care for individuals with memory care disorders and advancing the field of geriatrics,” said Bradley Sandella, clinical director of medical subspecialties, in a press release. “His stewardship will strengthen the Swank Center for Memory Care and Geriatric Consultation in its support of the growing number of people who are coping with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders and those who love them.”

The chair is made possible by a $2.5 million gift from the Swank Foundation.

• Bar Code Security in Wilmington has a new senior business advisor: George Gerchow, an experienced cybersecurity and IT professional who is CEO of the nonprofit XFoundation and co-author of the Center for Internet Security’s Quick Start Cloud Infrastructure Benchmark v1.0.0.
• Cynthia Karnai, chief operating officer of the Delaware State Housing Authority, has been nominated by Gov. John Carney to be the agency’s next director. Karnai would replace Eugene Young as he steps down this month to run for US Congress against Delaware State Sen. Sarah McBride.
• Lynn Roberts has been named the program manager for the Pete du Pont Freedom Foundation. Roberts is set to graduate from the University of Delaware in May with a bachelor’s degree in management information systems with a concentration in operations and a minor in entrepreneurship through UD’s HORN Entrepreneurship programs. She is also on track to complete a master’s in data analytics and information technology this year.
• Joseph Trainor has been named interim dean of the Joseph R. Biden Jr. School of Public Policy and Administration, effective March 1. He is currently a deputy dean and professor of public policy and administration in the Biden School, as well as a core faculty member in the Disaster Research Center. Trainor will serve as interim dean through July 2025 as the university conducts a national search for the school’s next leader.
