Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday kicked off the giving season. Now, it’s time for Giving Tuesday.
Launched in 2012 through a collaboration between the 92nd Street Y in New York City and the United Nations Foundation, Giving Tuesday aims to offer a counterpoint to the commercialization of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Instead, Giving Tuesday is a day for pause after spending money on gifts after Thanksgiving. Instead of shopping, those who participate in Giving Tuesday do good by donating money, time or resources.
Here are just some of the ways you can help your fellow Delawareans this Giving Tuesday:
Volunteer opportunities
Delaware’s nonprofits always need money. But if you don’t have much to offer financially this year, other ways to participate include:
- Donating blood
- Supporting a cause by contacting your congresspeople
- Volunteering as a literacy tutor for adults
- Helping families with seriously ill children
- Helping homeless families
- Making dinner for a family
- Volunteering at the Food Bank of Delaware
- Helping with forest restoration at White Clay State Park
- Helping seniors
- Distributing coats and toys
- Committing acts of kindness
- Helping animals
Monetary donations
If you’re able to give money, there are lots of local options. Delaware Gives makes it a bit easier to choose by gathering local nonprofits and charities in one place. You can also see which organizations have met their Giving Tuesday goals and which need an extra push. It’s also possible to submit an interest in volunteering.
Some of the Delaware Gives Giving Tuesday orgs include Delaware Center for Justice, Delaware Hospice, Innocence Project Delaware, SOAR and Wilmington Drama League.
Here are other organizations making targeted appeals for donations:
- Donations to the Delaware Art Museum will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Jessie Ball duPont Fund (up to $500) and the DelArt Board of Trustees (any amount) through Dec. 31. Gifts matched can be made online or by check
